From best selling author AFN Clarke this powerful novel traces an emotional journey of self-discovery between a heart broken daughter and her estranged father. “Unforgettable”, “dramatic” and “uplifting”, it’s “an absolutely beautiful story that will stay with you long after the last word is read!”
When Nikki Kimble’s mother dies, she is left with a deep sense of loss and an aching desire to find her father Jake, who disappeared from her life when she was only three. She leaves Rhode Island in search of him, hoping for answers to a lifetime of questions. But when she finds him aboard a battered yacht in the Florida Keys, their worlds collide and sparks fly, threatening to destroy the fragile bond that hangs like a thread between them. As their lives start to unravel they find themselves in the path of a deadly hurricane, perilously adrift in a raging sea on Jake’s now damaged and leaking yacht, lost in the Gulf of Mexico. Fighting for survival they face off, and emotions run high as they are forced to discover the truth about each other that neither is ready to accept.
Dedicated by the author to his daughters, this deeply moving novel explores the fragility of human emotions and the strength of the human spirit to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles that life places in our way.

DRY TORTUGAS edition by AFN CLARKE Literature Fiction eBooks
The reason I bought this book was because a year ago my father passed away but we had a lifelong struggle to "get along" he chose the alcohol over his daughters. I lived my life knowing and accepting this. But why? My mom died when I was 5 which can really change your life. Death in general but when it's a parent things are different on a personal accepting it stage. This book brought me to tears in parts as I am healing from the pain. The main character is Nikki whom I can identify with, after her mom dies wants to re-connect with her living father. She leaves everything behind to find her father “Jake.”But unlike my mom dying when I was five, Jake leaves Nikki and her mom when Nikki was three. What happens to your emotions along this journey with Nikki will grip you like a sponge and keep your attention, and possibly change your way of dealing with death of a parent.
I hope you like this book as much as I did as it is one year of healing from my own parent’s death and all I can do is praise the author for helping me release emotions I did not think I had and bring value to how to deal with death. © 2014 Jackie Paulson

DRY TORTUGAS edition by AFN CLARKE Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Dry Tortugas is an interesting read that shows an interesting process of an estranged father and daughter ocming to terms with finding an adult relationship, remembering and making peace with the past, and sobering up the father; all while stranded at sea.
The jump from the present to the flashback was a bit jarring, as were some of the character reactions to each other, especially the lover/daughter friction that seemed forced. I think there was a great deal of raw material that could have been developed further, while some things like the father's book-only knowledge of sailing but somehow being able to skillfully manage storms and winds while barely functioning due to withdrawal.
Overall, this was an entertaining read, with great knowledge of the Florida Keys area and people.
I was gifted this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This is the first book that I have read by AFN Clarke and it most certainly won't be my last! Clarke's writing is so beautifully descriptive that it transports the reader into the story. This is an emotional journey of self-discovery between a heart broken daughter and her estranged and disillusioned father. The perilous adventure that brings these two together after 20 years apart was one of self-discovery for both of them as their hearts start to heal and love slowly tears down the walls they both hide behind. An absolutely beautiful story that will stay with you long after the last word is read! I highly recommend this book!
Twenty years ago, Jake Kimble ran from his demons in Rhode Island and settle into the Florida Keys where he drank rum to avoid his past. He was weirdly famous for his one novel that made him millions and he lived a life of snorkeling and finding his beloved shells. Jake drinks to forget a daughter he hasn't seen in twenty years...............
Nikki Kimble . now an heiress, had longed for her dad for years as her mom slowly drank herself to death and always said he was dead when she asked about him then cackled insanely as she clutched a drink. Eve was insane and, she only discovered how far she had gotten as she reflected back on Eve's life now that she was old enough to understand her illness. She secreted a ten year old news clipping about her dad living in the Florida Keys and even though Sam Strauss said he was Jake was dead, she took Jake's vintage car and set out to find him...
Anthony Clarke pens a sensational story that started slow and to us non-nautical people a little overwhelming at times with nautical talk, but he captured readers with a dynamite plot as Jake was caught in the water as hurricane Joshua headed straight toward them! You can't help but be drawn in!!
We were vacationing in Key West with a day excursion to the Dry Tortugas, which prompted my purchase of this fictional book. While I understand, I think, that the Dry Tortugas was a metaphor for the relationship between the father and daughter, there is little else to connect the story to the location. Having said that, it is an entertaining light read for a vacation, emphasis on the 'light.'
very enjoyable.
Bringing to life real characters in a truly engaging story. I picked up this book because of the setting (sailboat, tropical islands...), but was unprepared for all that the book held secret until I read it. What a wonderful surprise! (AFN Clarke is a new author for me.) Before we even get to the relationship issues that are the basis for this story, we find ourselves in an anchored sailboat in Key West, in the midst of a full-blown hurricane. The author's depiction and description of this event had me in 4 places at once I was the man in the cockpit; I was the person below decks; I was riding out the storm from a perspective just above the action; and I was the battered boat holding it's own. Make that 5 places; I was also the raging storm and the powerful green-grey ocean. What a rush! Every one of my senses was engaged in this happening. And, this remained true for the entire book.
I wasn't expecting much adventure, but this book offered plenty -- and the movement between points in time added intrigue. All of this, even while the main point of this book is about relationships -- mostly about a father-daughter relationship. I love this author's writing style! He truly puts the reader right square in the middle of each scene, whether it be action-packed, a description, or a facial expression. Color. Intrigue. Suspense. Movement. Emotion. It's all there.
A very readable and engaging novel, moving constantly between the most personal thoughts and interactions between characters, and high action.
