When Things Were Black and White is a fact-based novel that documents the seemingly stable time in Detroit history when televisions, photographs, attitudes, neighborhoods were distinctly black and white, and how that era ended with the desegregation of schools, the 1967 riots, and the ultimate white flight to the suburbs.

When Things Were Black and White A Story from Detroit Dan David Books

My husband and I really enjoyed this book. The author writes about growing up in Detroit during the sixties, a time of social change. I also grew up during the same time in Detroit and enjoyed some of the recollections made by the author. However, one does not have to be a native Detroiter to enjoy this wonderful story. The author has beautifully captured the thoughts, fears, interests, and misconceptions a young elementary age child has about life and the people in his family, school, and neighborhood. Read this book and enjoy the memories you will recall.

When Things Were Black and White A Story from Detroit Dan David Books Reviews

As someone who has only been to Detroit a few times, for me this book gives the city a personality and a "face" that's so much different from the tales of urban decay or headlines about troubles in the car business. While the story is clearly based on events that took place during the author's life, it's not a memoir -- it's a novel -- and as a result it has a universality that makes it relevant to people from any time or place. An enjoyable, moving read that you don't have to be from Detroit to appreciate.
When Things Were Black and White is a story cultural change in the early sixties, told through the eyes of a seven or eight year old boy named Detlef. The boy's father is a police officer in Detroit who retires early and becomes the pastor of a small inner city church slated to be shut down. He pastors two such churches before moving out to the suburbs to start a new church at the end of the book. While there are a number of episodes in the book which are included to help create the world of the early sixties in the reader's mind, this is not a sentimental memoir or nostalgic journey to David's childhood. The title appears to refer to a time when things were simpler, decisions were easier because things were "black and white." But the title has a deeper meaning. This was a time when America was Black and White, and it was a scary time for a child to learn about the world.

This book made me laugh a number of times, but more often I was convicted about what America was in the sixties. I have a longer review on my blog, [..]
I am Dan's little sister who did not make the book. I love the way he put little things our Mother would say in it. Made me laugh when I read them. When reading this book I found out I was more like her then I thought. I too look for the specials and marked down items in the store. Our Mother has since past away, but her memories are kept forever in Dan's book. I have to say it was very interesting growing up with my 2 brothers. Thanks for reminding me of a life long ago. I'm proud of you My Dear Brother. I agree you should keep writing. Maybe next time about growing up in Escanaba..
Yes, I am the author's older evil brother. I am glad he did not use my name, for I can envision all the townspeople coming to my house at night with torches! I laughed out loud many times while reading the book; he is spot-on with his character portraits, and I, of course, remember the cast of characters. There are MANY more stories to be told, and I hope he takes the time to write a second book. I would like to let you all know that while Dan/Detlef is a wordsmith, he is also a valued educator and a talented musician and magician. Get this book--it's a great Summer read!
A lot of the parts of the story made me laugh, as well as ringing true in regards to my childhood. Author needs to continue this in a sequel.
This book is required reading for freshmen in the Grand Rapids school system. It was written by one of the High School English teachers. It is an accounting of his childhood growing up in Detroit in the early sixties. It is about a young boy trying to fit in to a changing world. It also tells of his father’s finding his place in the community, redirecting his career from policeman to minister. Things really were “Black and White”, but not as simple as the title implies. It is humorous, thought-provoking and an easy read. The father, incidentally, was our recent interim minister.
For a first book this is extraordinary. For an interesting perspective and....and for an astute perspective of the times it's extraordinary. It's Holden Caufield-ish. It's Big Chill-ish. It's very good, engaging writing. In ways it's a Detroit 1950's and 60's Forest Gump journey with a unique perspective...how do the times and national and local traumas impact the emerging intellect of a developing child psyche? No, it's not boring psychological babble! It's real life walking down the street, dealing with adults, other chidren, media impacts, etc. Is it only a Detroit book? No it's an important vignette filled potpourri of the circumstances that have developed so many of the societal prototypes existing in America today from strong liberala to TeaPartiers. It is Sinclair Lewis and Our Town in contemporary times. It deserves national exposure and high readership...and the author needs to look at a sequel and other writings.
